Wayang kulit, shadow puppets prevalent in Java and Bali in Indonesia, are without a doubt the best known of the Indonesian wayang. Kulit means skin, and refers to the leather construction of the puppets that are carefully chiseled with very fine tools and supported with carefully shaped buffalo horn handles and control rods.

The stories are usually drawn from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata or the Serat Menak.

There is a family of characters in Javanese wayang called Punakawan; they are sometimes referred to as “clown-servants” because they normally are associated with the story’s hero, and provide humorous and philosophical interludes. Semar is the father of Gareng (oldest son), Petruk, and Bagong (youngest son). These characters did not originate in the Hindu epics, but were added later, possibly to introduce mystical aspects of Islam into the Hindu-Javanese stories. They provide something akin to a political cabaret, dealing with gossip and contemporary affairs.

The puppets figures themselves vary from place to place. In Central Java the city of Surakarta (Solo) is most famous and is the most commonly imitated style of puppets. Regional styles of shadow puppets can also be found in West Java, Banyumas, Cirebon, Semarang, and East Java. Bali produces more compact and naturalistic figures, and Lombok has figures representing real people. Often modern-world objects as bicycles, automobiles, airplanes and ships will be added for comic effect, but for the most part the traditional puppet designs have changed little in the last 300 years.

Historically, the performance consisted of shadows cast on a cotton screen and an oil lamp. Today, the source of light used in wayang performance in Java is most often a halogen electric light. Some modern forms of wayang such as Wayang Sandosa created in the Art Academy at Surakarta (STSI) has employed spotlights, colored lights and other innovations.

The handwork involved in making a wayang kulit figure that is suitable for a performance takes several weeks, with the artists working together in groups. They start from master models (typically on paper) which are traced out onto kulit (skin or parchment), providing the figures with an outline and with indications of any holes that will need to be cut (such as for the mouth or eyes). The figures are then smoothed, usually with a glass bottle, and primed. The structure is inspected and eventually the details are worked through. A further smoothing follows before individual painting, which is undertaken by yet another craftsman. Finally, the movable parts (upper arms, lower arms with hands and the associated sticks for manipulation) mounted on the body, which has a central staff by which it is held. A crew makes up to ten figures at a time, typically completing that number over the course of a week.

The painting of less expensive puppets is handled expediently with a spray technique, using templates, and with a different person handling each color. Less expensive puppets, often sold to children during performances, are sometimes made on cardboard instead of leather.

Terdapat 5 komposisi utama kembang api yaitu: Binder, Oksidator, Reduktor, Agen Pemberi Warna, dan Regulator. Fungsi masing-masing dijelaskan sebagai berikut:

Binder
Binder berfungsi untuk agen pengikat sehingga seluruh bahan pembuat kembang api dapat dijadikan campuran berbentuk pasta. Binder yang sering dipergunakan adalah dextrin.

Regulator
Logam biasanya ditambahkan untuk mengatur kecepatan terjadinya reaksi pada kembang api. Semakin besar luas permukaan logam maka semakin cepat reaksi akan berlangsung.

Fuel
Karbon atau thermit umumnya dipakai sebagai fuel pada kembang api. Fuel akan melepaskan elektron pada oksidator. Menyebabkan oksidator tereduksi, selama proses ini berlangsung maka akan terjadi ikatan antara fuel dan oksigen membentuk produk yang lebih stabil, peristiwa pembakaran ini hanya memerlukan sedikit energi agar reaksinya berlangsung, dan ketika proses pembakaran dimulai maka akan dihasilkan energi yang cukup banyak untuk melelehkan dan menguapkan material lain sehingga terjadi percikan api yang menyebabkan terbentuknya cahaya kembang api.

Oksidator
Oksidator diperlukan sebagai penghasil oksigen untuk memulai proses pembakaran. Bahan oksidator yang dipakai biasanya dari golongan nitrat, klorat, ataupun perklorat. Awalnya nitrat dipakai sebagai bahan oksidator dan senyawa yang sering dipakai adalah kalium nitrat. Penguraian kalium nitrat adalah sebagai berikut:

2 KNO3 -> K2O + N2 + 2.5 O2

Tidak semua oksigen dari KNO3 diubah menjadi oksigen, dan reaksi berjalan tidak begitu ekstrim sehingga mudah di control. Hal ini menyebabkan nitrat dipakai sebagai reaksi awal penyulutan kembang api agar kembang api sampai di angkasa.

Untuk mendapatkan reaksi yang ekstrim (dalam arti kecepatan dan menghasilkan panas yang cukup) maka diperlukan oksidator yang lebih kuat dibandingkan nitrat. Ingat agar kembang api dapat menghasilkan kilatan cahaya maka kita harus membuat ion logam agen pemberi warna tereksitasi untuk itulah diperlukan suhu yang tinggi.

Klorat merupakan oksidator yang lebih baik dibandingkan dengan nirat, reaksi yang terjadi sangat ekplosif dan menghasilkan suhu yang tinggi selain itu semua oksigen dalam klorat dapat diubah menjadi oksigen. Memberikan oksigen dengan jumlah yang cukup untuk proses pembakaran pada kembang api.

2 KClO3 -> 2KCl + 3 O2

Sayangnya klorat tidak stabil dan diperlukan penanganan khusus dalam proses pembuatan kembang api, beberapa senyawa klorat dapat meledak ketika dijatuhkan ke tanah. Oleh sebab itu penggunaan klorat digantikan oleh perklorat. Perklorat sekarang banyak dipakai pada industri kembag apai karena stabil dan bereaksi sama ekstrimnya dengan klorat.

KClO4 -> KCl + 2O2

Reduktor
Reduktor bereaksi dengan oksigen yang dihasilkan oleh oksidator membentuk gas yang bertemperatur tinggi dan mengembang dengan cepat. Reduktor yang dipakai biasanya adalah belerang dan karbon.

S + O2 -> SO2

C + O2 -> CO2

Agen Pemberi Warna
Warna kembang api dihasilkan dari pemanasan senyawa logam tertentu. Atom logam menyerap energi yang dihasilkan dari reaksi oksidator dan reduktor diatas dan kemudian dia melepaskan energi itu kembali dalam bentuk cahaya dengan warna tertentu.

Energi yang diserap menyebabkan electron logam melompat dari tingkat energi standarnya ke tingkat energi yang lebih tinggi, dinamakan dengan istilah tereksitasi kemudian electron terebut kembali ke tingkat energi semula dengan membebaskan energi cahaya dengan panjang gelombang tertentu.

Ion logam yang dipakai untuk memberi warna pada kembang api diantaranya adalah:

Merah:
Garam stronsium atau garam lithium. Contohnya adalah litium karbonat Li2CO3 yang memberikan warna merah dan Stronsium karbonat yang memberikan warna merah cerah.

Oranye
Garam kalsium contohnya kalsium klorida CaCl2

Kuning
Garam natrium contohnya natrium lorida NaCl.

Hijau
Garam barium atau senyawa yang dapat menghasilkan gas Cl2. Contoh garam bariumnya adalah BaCl2.

Biru
Senyawaan tembaga contohnya tembaga(I) klorida CuCl.

Ungu
Campuran antara garam stronsium dan garam tembaga. Karena stronsium memberikan warna merah dan tembaga memberikan warna biru maka campuran kedua garam ini akan menghasilkan warna ungu.

Putih/Silver
Logam magnesium, titanium, ataupun aluminium.

Cara Membuat Kembang Api

Bahan ;

1. Belerang 1 gr

2. Serbuk besi baja 6 gr

3. Serbuk Sendawa 9 gr Kalium Nitrat, warnannya putih seperti garam…bisa di beli di     toko2 kimia,

4. Serbuk karang ayu 1 gr

5. Perekat kayu(lem kayu) 10cc

6. Kawat tali secukupnya

Cara membuat :

1. Ambil ember plastik yang berisi lem kayu, kemudian masukkan bahan no.1 s.d. 4 yang sebelumnya telah dicampur dan ditumbuk halus

2. Celupkan kawat tali ke dalam lem kayu lalu celupkan ke campuran bahan di atas, lalu angkat dan biarkan hingga kering
